Ten tips to nail any job interview

A job interview can be nerve-wracking and most of us are nervous and anxious before even enter the room. Over the past 13 years, I have interviewed scores of candidates for various positions. Here are my top 10 tips on how to ace any interview:

Do your research

Before your interview, do some research on the company and the industry it operates in.

Companies often share how they stand out through their mission and/or value statements on their websites. You will also show the interviewer that you have done your homework.

Study your CV

You should know your CV well.

It is your responsibility to convince the interviewer in a two to three minute pitch that you can do the job. Speak professionally and intelligently.

Know the job description

So, you’ve been shortlisted for an interview. Great stuff!

Your next step should be to fully understand the job description. Compare your CV to the job requirements listed in the ad.

This will help you tailor the discussion, so you can navigate the interview and discuss examples from previous jobs that will exemplify the traits.

Display your skills

Tell a story of how you were hard-working and instead of just saying it, come prepared with examples so you are ready to demonstrate your experience and expertise.

Ask good questions

Don’t be afraid to take notes during your interview.

Write down anything you would like further clarification on in case you don’t have a chance to ask questions immediately.

Many interviewers will ask you to prepare something for a follow-up interview. Make sure you have all the details before you walk out the door. Good questions are just another way to indicate you are serious about the role.

Build rapport

You know the saying, “There’s never a second chance to make a first impression?”

That holds very true in the case of job interviews. You will create a great setting for your interview by greeting the interviewer with a firm handshake and a pleasant smile.

Make eye contact

Eye contact is one of the most important interview techniques to master. Those who maintain quality eye contact when communicating are perceived as more confident and trustworthy.

Eye contact is one of the main reasons why companies want to meet you in person, even if you have already completed a telephone interview with them.

They want to see if you come across as sincere in your answers, how interested you are in the job role and they also want to judge your professionalism.

Body language

Body language can be just as important as the words you speak. It will communicate whether you are confident, relaxed, nervous, or unsure of yourself.

You must give off positive energy with your body language.

Sit up straight and don’t slouch. Show that you are alert and listening carefully to everything your interviewer is saying.

Be authentic

Never try to be what you “think” the job requires. Let your true self shine through and you will send off positive energy, if you are not being true to yourself the interviewer will sense your lack of authenticity right away.

Follow Up

After the interview, send a short and simple email and thank the interviewer for their time to meet with you.

If you use these tips, you will nail your job interview and be on your way to success in no time!
