Residents united at the Thrasher Park in Newlands East for the Music In The Park and Mini Flea-Market held on Sunday.
The successful family event, which saw hundreds of people gather at the park, was initiated by Palmer Security and hosted by Newlands East Watch Community Safety.
Lawrence Palmer of Palmer Security said, “We believe as a community that when one neighbour helps another, we strengthen our communities. The aim of this initiative is to unite our diverse community against crime and poverty in our neighbourhood.”
He added that the flea-market is open to all especially the senior citizens, who can make extra cash to feed their families and put food on the table.
At the event, funds were also raised for Leon Bernard Abrahams, who is going off to America to play soccer.
A potjie competition was also held, which was judged by local chefs.
NEWCS expressed their gratitude to Louie Coleman from Modern Tilers, who sponsored the jumping castle and water slide for the children.
They also thanked Freedoms South Africa NPO from Wentworth for attending the event to assist the ward 11 community with the clearance of criminal records.
“God loves unity in the community and this must be promoted to all other communities countrywide,” said Palmer.
Well-known singer, Verd and other local talented artists and comedians will be giving back to community at the next Music In The Park Event which will be held on November 4 at the same venue.
