One of four suspects was fatally wounded following a shootout with police officers in the Chesterville vicinity, over the weekend.
It is believed that the suspects began firing shots at the police officers, when they were stopped during an operation.
Provincial police spokeswoman, Col Thembeka Mbele said police were conducting an operation in the Cato Manor policing precinct when they spotted four unknown men.
“Police approached them in Nkomo Road in order to conduct a search. The suspects fled and started shooting at the police, who returned fire,” said Col Mbele.
She added that a 35-year-old police officer sustained a gunshot wound to the leg and was taken to hospital for medical attention.

“A suspect was fatally wounded while another was arrested. The others managed to evade arrest,” she explained.
Police recovered a pistol with 10 rounds of ammunition. The arrested suspect will be charged for attempted murder and possession of unlicensed firearm as well as ammunition.
The recovered firearm will be subjected for ballistic testing to ascertain if it was used in other crimes.
