Huge sports boost for Hillview Secondary

Acting school principal, Mr Charles Green, Nkosana Makhanya from the Sports Trust , Joanne Ryan, PRO of Newands East Community Sports and other role-players who were present at the sports equipment handover.

Pupils, staff and management of Hillview Secondary School were all smiles when they received a generous sponsorship of sports equipment and top coaches have come on board to offer their services.

The school is a proud beneficiary of sports equipment donated by the Sports Trust in partnership with the SAB Active Education.

The Sports Trust donated sporting equipment for the different sporting codes the school offers. Representative from the Sports Trust, Nkosana Makhanya, said sport and recreation are important aspects of modern life and have increasingly important roles to play in the quality of life of communities across Africa.

“Various studies have illustrated that using recreation, sports and play to engage young people offers viable alternatives to risky behavior. Sports and recreation can reduce violence, crime and teenage pregnancy in schools and communities as the spirit of camaraderie provides an alternative to gang and crime-related activities,” he said.

He added that the Sports Trust in partnership with the SAB Active Education has rolled out a programme targeted at high schools all over South Africa.

“Each school has two coaches in soccer and netball that come in everyday for Life Orientation lessons as well as extra murals and matches that are played weekly. There will be soccer and netball tournaments held on a Saturday every month at the selected high schools,” he said.

He also said they believe that by offering consistent and regular practices and events, it will revive and grow sports within schools and communities.

“Along with this revival we can hopefully see a education in social ills that occur when learners are bored and are not kept occupied. This initiative continues to expand around the country and effect more lives each day,”said Makhanya.

Hillview Secondary School acting principal, Charles Green, said they are elated and absolutely over the moon about the sponsorship.

“This will benefit our pupils and boost the physical activities at the school. We are happy to have landed this sponsorship,” said Green.
