Activists on the hunt for illegal dumpers

Members of the Clare Estate Patrollers Sector 2 Forum clean up the area which had become a dumping ground.

Community activists who are affiliated to the Clare Estate Patrollers Sector 2 (CEPS2) Forum, have taken it upon themselves to embark on a clean-up programme within the area.

The project and operation was discussed and made known to the community at a recent CPF meeting.

CEPS2 members selected an area of concern which was posing a threat to the public, residents, and the informal dwellers. The location selected was at the lower end of Wandsbeck Rd in Clare Estate just over the bridge.

“The area was becoming so hazardous to the extent that suspects were beginning to hide in the bush and occasionally attack their victims while on their way home. We recently attended to a victim that was stabbed in the head. Sydenham SAPS assisted us when the call was made and the patient was transported to hospital. This is just one of the many incidents that occur in the area. In addition to this, we have the illegal dumpers that continue dumping at the said location. They have no respect for the ‘no dumping’ sign boards in place,” said PRO, Yaseen Ismail.

Going out in full force, CEPS2 members kitted themselves up and got down and dirty.

Members cleaned up the area and once the area is fully cleared up, they intend on planting some vegetation which will benefit the community and a floral garden to beautify the place and keep it tidy.

Patrol members also managed to intercept one of two vehicles that were dumping in the area. Metro Police assisted and issued the suspect with a R5,000 fine.

“This is a message to illegal dumpers that if you come to our area and think it is a dump site, our patrol members and community who cares will not be lenient with you. We will make sure you are dealt with and pay the price. Enough is enough!” said Ismail.

He added, “We would like to thank Mr Avi of AM Bobcat Hire for offering his assistance with his machinery to help clean up the area. Clare Estate residents, we urge you to step up your game and start taking charge of your area, this is your home.”
