St Michael’s pupil wins Art Smart recycling competition

Principal, Harry Haricharan with Navitha Sewduth (art teacher), Kieyara Ramdhani (first place), Esparance Mishehe (second place) and Kreeba Reddy (deputy principal).

Park Boulevard Centre recently announced the winners of their Art Smart recycling competition, which saw schools from the Durban North area taking the top three places.

The top three pupils were invited to a prize-giving ceremony at the centre recently where Bianca Rungasamy, the current runner up of the 2017 Miss Earth South Africa Competition, assisted in the handover of the prizes, together with property manager under the Broll Property Group, Elisabeth Pretorius.

Out of the many entries received, the judges decided on the following winners. In first place was Kieyara Ramdhani from St Michael’s Primary School who created a camera from cardboard, gum paper, a plastic bottle cap and cork. She is 10-years-old and in Grade five. She won R1, 500 in cash for herself and R5, 000 for her school.

In second place was another St Michael’s Primary School pupil, Esparance Mishehe, who created a Converse shoe made from paper, plastic and an old shoe lace.  She is a 12-years-old and in Grade six and won R850 in cash.

In third place was Amelie Maujean, a six-year-old grade one pupil from Chelsea Preparatory School, who created a Mosaic artwork using cardboard and different coloured plastic bottle caps. She won R500 in cash.

“With this competition being in its second year, we were astounded by the creativity of the entries received and are proud to have selected these three winners. We believe in making a difference to the environment by not only cleaning up litter that ends up in our oceans,  but by encouraging recycling and teaching the younger generations about looking after the Earth through competitions such as this,” said Pretorius.

Rungasamy who assisted in the prize-giving as a Miss Earth ambassador, has studied Environmental Management and has an evident passion for the environment and education and the important relationship between the two.

“It is so important to teach the importance of recycling at a young age. If we inform our future generations of the importance of keeping our oceans litter free, they are then able to do their part in making a difference and passing the message on to generations that come after them,” she said.

School principal, Harry Haricharan, was ecstatic to receive the news of the success of two of his pupils who took first and second place and for the cash win.

“We are so thankful to the Park Boulevard Centre, our pupils and our Art teacher, Navitha Sewduth, who encouraged pupils to get involved. This prize money will go towards the quality of education at our school and will be well used,” he said.
