WARNING: Screen your workers before employing them

Police are warning employers to screen prospective workers before allowing them into their homes and falling victims to crime.

Police have issued a stern warning to employers to carefully screen their workers before employing them and allowing strangers into their personal space and homes.

The warning comes after an 80-year-old woman from Reservoir Hills was recently tied up in her home and robbed by two suspects. Sydenham SAPS communications officer, Cpt Myentherin Lazarus, said after the victim had managed to untie herself, she noticed the domestic worker’s uniform on the floor.

“The domestic worker has not been heard of or seen since the incident,” said Cpt Lazarus. A case of house robbery is being investigated by the police. In a separate incident, an 81-year-old Asherville woman was put through a similar ordeal by three suspects. who held her up and demanded money.

“When she said she doesn’t have money, the suspects made a call and spoke to someone who was obviously giving them ‘inside information.’  The ladies garden service then arrived and frightened the suspects off,” he said.

Cpt Lazarus has urged employers to carefully screen workers before employing them and also get a photograph of the employee. “Be sure to treat your employees well as most cases where domestic workers are involved, it is out of revenge for poor treatment by the employer.  When leaving senior citizens alone at home have some sort of oversight strategy, a neighbour who can look in every so often/a relative or even the security company to check on them. Forget about the valuables, the seniors that are left at home are our most valuable assets,” he said.
