Durban court convicts rapist

The Durban Magistrates Court recently convicted and sentenced a 29-year-old man to 18 years imprisonment for a rape that was committed in 2008.

KZN’s acting provincial commissioner, Maj Gen Bheki Langa not only welcomed the sentence meted out to the accused but also praised the FCS unit for their sterling investigation, which led to the conviction.

Provincial police spokesman, Lt Col Thulani Zwane said that on October 13, 2008, the 28-year-old victim was with her friend at a house when she was called by the accused, who pretended to be sent by her boyfriend. “The victim went outside the house but refused to go with the accused,” he explained.

The accused then threatened her with a broken bottle and forced her to go with him in a dark passenger, where he raped her. A case was subsequently opened and then transferred to the local FCS unit for further investigation.

The accused was arrested on August 1, 2016 and has since then made several court appearances before his sentencing. “We cannot tolerate culprits who terrorise our vulnerable women and children. We urge all victims of violent crimes to report such incidents to the police,” Maj Gen Langa concluded.
