A walk down memory lane for DHS 1975 head prefect

DHS head prefect, Zakariya Adam, Mike Bowles, Tony Human from the DHS Foundation and Donovan Adams (Blackmore house head prefect).

Durban High School recently received a visit from an old friend of the school, the 1975 head prefect, Mike Bowles. Bowles, who currently resides in the UK, visited family in the province and decided to give DHS a visit to reconnect with Tony Human, a former teacher and current member of the DHS Foundation Trust.

The Bowles family are quite a well-known group among DHS Old Boys and long-standing staff, as they are the only family to have three members serve as head prefect of school and head prefect of Blackmore House in their respective years – a record which is yet to be beaten.

Mike’s brother, Neil, served before him in both roles in 1970 and their father, Ivor, served in both roles in 1946. The Bowles family grew up in Harding and resided at the DHS boarding house when they attended Durban High School.

Currently, Mike Bowles is a semi-retiree, however he still serves as financial director for a number of companies based in Dubai and the UK as well as representing South Africa on behalf of Timber products in the USA. He is also a husband and father of 3.

When he reminisces about his past years at DHS, he recalls certain traits and lessons by his teachers, especially his Science teacher, Mr Tony Human, who served on the DHS staff for over 50 years.

In his final year, when he was head prefect, Mike was awarded Honours for Cricket, as well as Colours for Rugby.  He believes that his role as Head Prefect allowed his leadership skills to flourish, which proved to be a valuable skill during his time spent in the workplace. Durban High School are proud to have Old Boys such as Mike and his family and wish them well for the future.
