Provincial Drug Unit ‘cracks’ down on dealers in CBD

The cocaine, mandrax tablets and ecstasy tablets, worth R485, 000, which police successfully seized in Durban.

The Provincial Drug Unit has once again intensified their fight against narcotics in the Durban Central area by capturing a 44-year-old suspected drug dealer and seizing drugs almost worth half a million rand.

The men and women in blue have been hard at work to clamp down on the drug trade in the CBD and this recent achievement has sent out a strong message to drug dealers in the community.

On Friday, the unit immediately acted on intelligence received regarding a suspect, who was transporting drugs in the Durban CBD. Col Thembeka Mbhele of the South African Police Service, said that upon following up on the information, police officers spotted a silver Toyota Corolla in the vicinity of Cathedral Lane in Durban.

“They intercepted the said vehicle. The driver was subsequently searched and found in possession of a cigarette box,” Col Mbhele explained. According to Col Mbhele, there were two clear packets, containing 15 grams of cocaine inside the cigarette box.

“Further investigations then led the dedicated team to the suspect’s house in Botanic Road where more drugs were confiscated,” she said. Inside the premises, police officers located a black bag which contained packets filled with mandrax and ecstasy tablets.

The suspect was placed under arrest and charged duly, according to police reports.  Col Mbhele confirmed that the estimated street value of the recovered drugs is R485, 000.

“The suspect made his first court appearance on Monday, January 8,” she concluded. KZN’s acting provincial commissioner, Maj Gen Bheki Langa praised his fellow officers for their rapid response. He ensured that all those who are dealing in drugs would be put behind bars.

“We will continue with our operations as part of our respective operations,” he added.  This is not the only achievement the Provincial Drug Unit has to celebrate as last month, they nabbed a 42-year-old suspect at South Beach, who was also dealing in drugs.

Police officers seized 550 pills of ecstasy, 150 grams of cocaine, meth and rock cocaine, amounting to a total of R200, 000.  A 29-year-old alleged drug dealer was apprehended after he was found in possession of more than 100 ecstasy tablets and more than nine grams of crystal meth on Marine Parade.

Additional successes for the unit include the recent arrest of two alleged drug dealers in the Point area. The street value of the seized drugs is worth R20, 000. The Provincial Drug Unit remains more determined than ever to root out the drug trade in the sunny city of Durban and locals have heaped praises upon them for the drug-related arrests.

A resident of South Beach, who requested anonymity, said that while the issue of drugs remain unabated in the area, he does take comfort in knowing that police officers are doing the best that they can to make a difference.

“I thank them for their adherence and obedience. With such dedication shown, I am confident that drugs can be tackled in our respective communities. Durban is a beautiful city that has so much to offer tourists and its locals. Police are on the right track thus far and I wish them many more successes of this nature to come,” he proudly said.
