Greenwood Park police have warned Uber and metered taxi drivers to be on high alert when picking up passengers following reported cases of hijacking, robberies and attacks on drivers.
According to the station’s communications officer, Sgt Vincent Mthembu, in recent reported cases, the suspects are usually coming from night-clubs, casinos or taverns, they then call a taxi, knowing that they will not pay but rob the driver and hijack him of his vehicle.

In a recent case, the complainant had accepted a trip from a casino and had to transport passengers to KwaMashu.
“As the driver was approaching Avoca Hills, both passengers pulled out their firearms and ordered the driver to get to the backseat of the vehicle. They searched him and took his cellphone, money and bank cards. They asked for pin codes of the bank cards, threatening to kill him if he gave wrong information,” said Sgt Mthembu.
It is alleged that the suspects were later joined by another three men. They then allegedly stripped the vehicle and took him on a terror ride and dumped him in Lindelani.
“We are appealing to drivers to be vigilant and take extra precautions when asked to pick up clients,” said Sgt Mthembu.
