‘System manipulator’ caught by police

A 29-year-old man appeared in the Durban Magistrate’s Court after he was arrested for contravening the Electronic Communication Act, recently.

Police spokesman, Lt Col Thulani Zwane said, “It is alleged that during July 2016, the man resigned from a consulting company, which offers a networking service to various clients. On August 14, 2017, the owners of the company received a tender document to capture on their computer system but were unable to open the folder that stored the information as well as other important files.”

A charge in terms of the Electronic Communication Act was opened for investigation. Lt Col Zwane explained that investigations revealed that a IP address was used to encrypt data and folders by using a ‘password protected’ folder. It therefore became unreadable to the complainant.

“A search and seizure warrant was authorised and the suspect was arrested. He was granted bail of R5, 000 and re-appeared on October 15, 2017. Investigations are continuing,” he concluded.
