Colour and splendour at NeDFest’s Diwali festival

NeDFest queen, Vasie Veerasamy and first princess, Premilla Baboolall.

Residents of Newlands and surrounding areas braved the inclement weather to the sixth annual Diwali festival held at Newlands West Secondary on Saturday.

NeDFest secretary, Sangeeta Naipal said it was indeed a day of splendour and grandeur as local performers showcased their amazing talent.

“Medical practitioners generously attended to the many residents who came in to assess their health. All were treated to a sumptuous meal. One of the highlights of the evening was the sari queen contest,” she said.

Thirteen beautiful dames graced the stage and charmed the audience and judges with their flamboyant and evergreen saris.

Crowned NeDFest queen for 2017 was Vasie Veerasamy , who hails from Bonella. The first princess was Premilla Baboolall from Newlands and while the second princess was Saras Beharie from the Clayton Garden Homes. Each entrant received a prize.

NeDFest expressed their gratitude to all sponsors, performers and members who contributed to the success of the event.
