A weekend of exciting sporting activities

Youngsters who enjoyed the activities.

The Siripat Road Sports Complex came alive this weekend when the Reservoir Hills Sports and Recreation Club (RHSRC) hosted a soccer gala on Saturday and the Netball League matches were played on Sunday.

Saturday’s matches were full of excitement as the local boys hosted teams from Newlands in the various age categories. Vikash Sookdeo and Yasheen Mohanlall from Newlands started a similar project to that of the RHSRC where the children are given a positive platform to engage their free time.

This is an ideal way of distracting youth from indulging in smoking, drugs, alcohol and other unsavory activities. The lads, aged from five to 16, enjoyed a full day of soccer. After an exciting day of soccer, players were given a medal, meals and cool-drinks.

Sookdeo has extended a similar invitation to the Reservoir Hills lads within the next two months. Activities of this nature ensures that youth interact with children their age and make new friends. It is also a good platform to learn from each other.

On Sunday, the sports field was abuzz with the eThekwini Metro Netball League games. The tension was mounting as Shannon Stars who led the pack seemed invincible. Before this week’s encounter, they were six matches unbeaten.

This week, they were up against second placed Vutha and mid table Varsity Girls. After winning both their matches, Shannon Stars were perched on top of the league with 24 points from eight matches. The dark horses of the league, Pemary have beaten Red Square to remain unbeaten but positioned in third spot as they have three matches in hand and seem the only team that could challenge Shannon Stars.

Chesterville beat both Hillview and Annet to consolidate their second position. Burnwood were thumped 25-5 by Red Square and later in the afternoon played a humdinger of a match against Annet, which was declared the ‘Match of the Day.’

Burnwood were a little unlucky to have lost 10-11 to Annet. The netball action is heating up and junior players who want to be selected to make the squad to compete against other associations can contact executive member Ms Phindi on 071-417-9094, who will advise on registration and participation.
