Another accolade for karate expert

Sonny Pillay receives the award from Ronnie Knott of SA JKA Karate.

South Africa’s karate legend who was appointed on the World Karate Federation (WKF) technical board, Sonny Pillay, was honoured by SA JKA Karate at the celebration of his 50 years in the karate field.

The special recognition was bestowed by senior karate leader Ronnie Knott, who is the sensei of one of the foremost structured karate organisations in South Africa.

“We recognise the outstanding contribution Sonny Pillay Hanshi has made in regulating our noble sport karate given the turbulent past that KSA faced with poor governance metered out by the past administrations,” said Knott, who is also the current chairman of the Overberg region in the Western Cape.

Upon receiving the accolade, the karate expert expressed his delight at the respect afforded to him by South Africa’s largest karate association.

“It is gratifying to know that my hard work over 50 years in the field has not gone unnoticed,” he said. “Moreover, these accolades such as the one recently bestowed on me by my karate colleague Sensei Ronnie Knott from the highly respected SA JKA Karate inspires me to ‘soldier on’ albiet my entering the twilight zone of my karate career,” added Pillay Hanshi.

“I encourage the youth of today to engage in karate practice especially given that karate is now an Olympic sport and will be an integral part of the World Youth Olympics in 2018 and the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
