Man arrested for killing his girlfriend

A 31-year-old Cato Manor man was arrested for murder after his girlfriend died at King Edward Hospital over the weekend.

It is alleged that the suspect burnt Ayanda Mathe, 25, with boiling water following a domestic dispute which occurred on July 23. She had suffered severe third degree burns following the incident.

Mathe was hospitalised in July and succumbed to her injuries recently. According to Cato Manor communications officer, Cpt CA Sibiya, an argument ensued between the couple after the deceased had asked the suspect for money to buy necessities for their children.

“The suspect then poured boiling water over her lower body,” he said. The suspect was arrested and charged for murder on Tuesday morning. He appeared in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.

“This is a lesson to all abusive partners that abuse does not pay. We condemn domestic abuse and encourage residents to report such incidents. We will keep all perpetrators of crime behind bars,” said Cpt Sibiya.
