Robbers target Parlock temple

The Maha Shiv Mandir in Hippo Road which was robbed by armed men.

Hindu devotees believe that it was the divine intervention of Lord Krishna that saved them from a gang of ruthless balaclava-clad robbers who robbed them of their valuables and cash on Monday night.

About 10 men carrying high-calibre guns stormed the Maha Shiv Mandir on Hippo Road while congregants were celebrating and observing Krishna Janmashtami, a celebration of the birth of Lord Krishna.

Still shaken, a distraught executive member of the temple and spokesman said, the incident left the defenseless worshippers traumatised and shocked.

“Robbers are not only pouncing on the community but are targeting religious institutions which are becoming soft targets,” he said.

“We finished with the service and as we were leaving the premises, we were approached by a group of armed men. The assailants pushed us inside the temple and demanded that we all lie down and not scream. They then took valuables and cash and three vehicles,” he said.

Police spokesman, Col Thembeka Mbhele said, “No injuries were reported. The suspects fled with cash, wallets, cellphones, jewellery and three vehicles. They fired one shot before fleeing the scene.” Two of the three vehicles were later recovered in Clermont. A charge of business robbery is being investigated by Newlands East police.
