Suspected Sydenham carjacker shot and arrested following shootout with police

A suspected carjacker was shot and arrested following a shootout with police officers, earlier this week. It is believed that on Monday, August 8 at about 7pm, a 29-year-old man was at Abelia Road in Sydenham, seated in his vehicle, when he was accosted by three armed suspects.

The suspects robbed the man of his BMW at gunpoint and drove off. Later that day, KwaDabeka Crime Prevention members spotted the said vehicle near the KwaDabeka Clinic with three occupants.

Police officers attempted to stop the vehicle but the suspects opened fire at them while fleeing. The police returned fire and wounded one of the suspects. The remaining two suspects managed to flee the scene unharmed.

A firearm was recovered at the scene and will be sent for ballistic testing to determine if it was used in the commission of any other crime in the country.

The injured suspect was taken to hospital for medical attention and will appear in the Pinetown Magistrates’ Court soon for possession of suspected stolen property and attempted murder. He will also be taken to the Sydenham police station where he will be charged for carjacking.
