Springfield Park business robbed, two arrested

Police are on the hunt for four men who are still at large following a business robbery in the Springfield Park area on Sunday.

Six men, armed with firearms and knives, stormed into a business premises in Aloefield Road and took an undisclosed amount of cash from employees. They also searched patrons and took their cellphones and wallets.  Police reports stated that when the suspects were fleeing, they shot and wounded a customer.

“All suspects fled the scene and local police assisted by neighbouring police stations reacted to the robbery. One suspect was later traced and arrested. It is further alleged that two other suspects ran into Umgeni River and attempted to swim across the river, but one had difficulties. He was found hiding in the water and was arrested by the police Search and Rescue Unit. The other four suspects are still at large,” said police spokesman, Col Thembeka Mbhele.

KwaZulu-Natal acting provincial commissioner, Major General Bheki Langa, praised the members for their swift reaction to the robbery that led to the arrest of two suspects.

“Our trio crime unit together with our detectives will work harder to establish if the arrested suspects are not part of the gang that is terrorising the businesses in the province. The police will trace those who are still at large and brought them to book,” he said.
