Police halt armed robbers getaway

Two men were arrested and a Z88 firearm was recovered following an armed robbery on O’ Flaherty Road in Clare Estate on Friday.

According to Sydenham SAPS communications officer, Cpt Myentherin Lazarus, the victim was at his place of work paying his workers when he was accosted by three males who were armed with firearms. They took an unknown amount of cash, cellphones and fled.

“Crime Prevention Unit members were patrolling O’ Flaherty Road when they noticed three men running out of a driveway. The suspects then fired at police. The officers then called for back-up and the Airwing, Dog Unit and other officers responded to the call and gave chase. Two of the suspects ran into the new development. The first suspect was arrested and was found in possession of a Z88 pistol with 16 live rounds of ammunition. The second suspect was arrested in a nearby bush and the third suspect is still being sought,” he said.

The arrested suspects, aged 26 and 35, were charged for armed robbery, possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition. They appeared in the Durban Magistrates’ Court.
