In a smart effort to integrate technology with learning, UKZN student, Nirvana Gounden chose to release two study guides entitled, ‘I DO U DO MATHS’, which are quickly gaining much recognition at various schools.
In an interview with the 32-year-old Durban resident, she explained that these smartphone interactive books were launched in March and how she aims to inspire pupils throughout the country.
“I taught maths at a high school level for about eight years and have consistently experienced large numbers of pupils who had difficulty in grasping content and skills in the subject. This was as a direct result of the youngsters not being able to understand prior content and skills in the traditional medium that it is presented in,” she told journalists.
According to Gounden, she had an epiphany while reading up on Educational Technology for her Education PhD project proposal. She added, “It was then and there that I remembered that children of today grow up with technology. We need to find smart ways to integrate technology with their learning and what’s smarter than a smartphone nowadays? I knew that embarking on this initiative would reap the benefits and assist pupils in an innovative way.”
Gounden further explained that there are two workbooks in the set. Book 1 focusses on Algebra (grades 8 to 12), Calculus (grade 12) and Number patterns (grades 8 to 12) while Book 2 pays attention to Trigonometry (grades 10 to 12), Geometry (grades 8 to 12) and Functions (grades 8 to 12).
“Each section in the books have QR codes (to be read using a smartphone) that link to video math tuition lessons on Youtube where I teach the relevant concepts. This is such an amazing way to give back to pupils experiencing difficulty in mathematics. I started life with a flair for maths but I grew to have a passion for teaching maths and I am certain that there are people out there who are just like me,” she added.
To date, Gounden said that she is very grateful for the phenomenal response that she has received. “I have been receiving book orders and calls of interest daily from parents, principals and math HODs. Experience has shown me first-hand, the frustrations that pupils encounter with maths in class. I am confident that these books will ease the frustrations that both pupils and teachers may be experiencing,” she proudly stated.
Gounden is planning to release another book which will focus on Euclidean geometry proofs. Her advice to pupils is to keep calm and always refer to their ‘I DO U DO MATHS’ workbooks should they have any difficulty or miss something in class. In her spare time, she enjoys taking her dog, Brutus for walks on the beach.
She concluded by saying that she wishes to thank her parents, who are also teachers, for inspiring her to always work hard and love what you do. For more information, visit www.idoudomaths.com, email [email protected] or call 078-425-4030.
