Two friends arrested for fake kidnapping

Two friends were charged with defeating the ends of justice after staging a kidnapping in Inanda, recently. The 23-year-old victim had been missing since December 19.

According to police reports, his kidnapper friend made a call to his sister to inform her that her brother had been kidnapped. A case of kidnapping was reported at Greenwood Park police station and was transferred to Newlands East SAPS for further investigation.

The investigating officer found out that the victim’s father called the kidnapper and was told to deposit a certain amount of money into a money market account. The father did as he was instructed but was again told to deposit more money.

The officer followed up on information as the money had been withdrawn in Inanda.  This led to the arrest of the suspect after he had withdrawn the money that was deposited the second time.

Newlands East SAPS spokesman, Cpt ND Zikali said, “During the arrest, the suspect was found with the victim. It was later established that they had planned the whole thing together and that they also spent the money together. Both the suspect and victim were arrested and detained at the station.” They will appear in the Newlands Court for kidnapping and defeating the ends of justice respectively.
