Suspect killed by ‘kangaroo court’

A suspected criminal who was caught breaking into a Newlands West home was fatally assaulted  by residents on Thursday morning. It is alleged that the man believed to be in his 30s, forcefully entered the premises while the house owner’s sons were sleeping.

When one of the sons heard a noise, he woke up to investigate. The son was attacked by the suspect who stabbed him in the right arm following a scuffle. The suspect had taken two cellphones, an iPad and a handbag from the house.

Newlands East SAPS communications officer, Cpt ND Zikali, said, “The victims chased after the suspect who had fled. They then alerted residents and taxi drivers for help. Scores of community members who were nearby joined the chase and the suspect was eventually caught.”

The suspect was allegedly repeatedly assaulted by residents. He succumbed to his serious head injuries and later died at the scene. A pair of All Star takkies, Okapi knife, screw driver and a broken hockey stick were recovered from the deceased. The items he had stolen from the house were also recovered.

Police are appealing to anyone who might assist with the identity of the deceased to contact SAPS Newlands East detectives on 031-574 7133. “The deceased was about 1,54m in height, slender and dark in complexion and had a gold slit in his front teeth. He was wearing blue pants, grey jacket and white all star tekkies,” said Zikali. He added that police are warning community members to not take the law into their own hands.
