An alleged house robber was shot and killed by an off-duty police officer at his house in Chippendale, Newlands West in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

It is alleged that the complainant who is a police member was asleep in his bedroom when he heard his 22-year-old son scream for help.

He immediately rushed to check on him and discovered that his son was in an altercation with the suspect and was bleeding.  Police spokesman, Col Thembeka Mbhele said, “The complainant screamed out for his wife to give him his firearm.  At that time, the complainant also joined his son and wrestled the knife from the unknown suspect.  The assailant drew the firearm which was later discovered to be a toy gun. The complainant held the suspect down until his wife gave him his service firearm and eventually shot the perpetrator in the stomach. The suspect died instantly.”

The complainant’s son was rushed to the hospital as he sustained a stab wound to the left side of his body. It was later discovered that a HiFI System and cellphones were taken from the house. A case of murder, inquest and house robbery was registered for investigation. No arrests have been made at this stage yet.
